Manuel Aires Mateus, João Jesus and Gabriel Tan: The new confirmations for Topázio’s 150th anniversary collection
The luxurious collection of vases from Topázio, an art de la table brand celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, includes the creatives Manuel Aires Mateus, João Jesus and Gabriel Tan.
Manuel Aires Mateus, architect and founder of the Aires Mateus studio, is a professor at the Autonomous University of Lisbon and collaborates with various universities such as Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, Cornell University College of Architecture, Art and Planning and the Oslo School of Architecture, among others. As well as taking part in various exhibitions, such as the Venice Architecture Biennale or the Chicago Architecture Biennale, his studio has received multiple awards, such as the Pessoa Prize, the Ibero-American Architecture Biennale and the Mies Van Der Rohe Awards.
When designing the vase, the architect said he wanted to convey “an idea of timelessness that relates to Topázio’s legacy”.

João Jesus is a partner and principal architect at OODA, a studio that challenges the traditional architectural model. He has a degree in Architecture from the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto and is also on the Europe 40 under 40 list.
“Topázio is a benchmark in the sector for working with large pieces and that would be enough to pass on its legacy. That’s why I endeavoured to keep the elements incorporated to a minimum and ensure that the innovative image and manual techniques were the benchmarks of this process,” says João Jesus regarding the creation of the vase.
Gabriel Tan is a designer, founder of Gabriel Tan Studio and creative director of the Japanese furniture brand Ariake. He is also co-founder of the craft-orientated design brand Origin Made. He has also designed furniture and products for B&B Italia, Herman Miller, Audo Copenhagen and Abstracta, among others.
The launch of Topázio’s luxury collection in honour of its 150th anniversary includes 15 renowned national and international creatives in the fields of design, architecture and contemporary art.
