National Architecture Prize in Wood: Applications Open

The PNAM – National Prize for Architecture in Wood, held every two years, aims to encourage and promote the Portuguese forestry sector through innovation, enhancement, circularity, promotion and use of wood and its derivatives in architecture and construction.

The PNAM is intended to reward permanent works carried out in Portugal, which show the use of wood as a relevant material in architecture and which are authored by architects registered with the Portuguese Architects Association.

Since its launch, the award has gained increasing national and international prestige, receiving a large number of applications and giving visibility to relevant works such as the Paiva Walkways, in 2017, the Hotel Casa do Rio, by Architect Francisco Vieira de Campos, in the 2019 edition, and the “House in the Chestnut Tree” by Architect João Mendes Ribeiro, in 2021.

In each edition a Jury is invited, composed by personalities from the national panorama of recognised merit and prestige in the areas of Architecture, Engineering and Industry, having been presided by numerous renowned personalities in the world of architecture in Portugal, namely Architect Pedro Bandeira, Gonçalo Byrne, Nuno Sampaio, Francisco Vieira de Campos among others. In this year’s edition, the Jury is chaired by Architect João Mendes Ribeiro.

The award ceremony is held in emblematic spaces of several cities of Portugal always linked to the Academy in the Teaching of Architecture. This year’s edition will be held in September in the city of Matosinhos, which has supported PNAM from the very first moment, receiving full support from the Municipality and the University of Porto through the Faculty of Architecture. The prize has a national scope and as such also has the participation in the Jury of the Architecture Department of the Autonomous University of Lisbon, represented by architect Inês Lobo.

The Organising Committee of PNAM is made up of three entities: AIMMP – Associação das Indústrias de Madeira e Mobiliário de Portugal, Ordem dos Arquitectos and the Confederação Portuguesa da Construção e Imobiliário which, in each edition, is reinforced by a set of entities that participate as Sponsors, Institutional Support and Media Partners, and which enable its realisation. In this edition, we highlight the participation of the VICAIMA Group as Platinum Sponsor, whose interest in the use of wood in architecture of excellence is a drive of the positioning of this important national group.

PNAM is above all an aggregator – “AN AWARD WHICH UNITS TALENT AND KNOWLEDGE ON WOOD ARCHITECTURE” – and constitutes the recognition of the enormous quality of the national architecture allied to wood as a construction material with excellent qualities at structural, aesthetic level and framed in the context of Circular Economy, being a natural raw material originating from our forests and its industry, of which the AIMMP is the national and international representative.
