Cristina Archer : The power of Lighting

Lighting is one of the most powerful elements in interior decoration, though it is often underestimated. More than simply allowing us to see, light creates atmospheres, defines volumes, enhances materials, and brings spaces to life. The way it falls — soft, intense, diffuse or direct — directly influences how a room is perceived and experienced.
In an interior design project, lighting is just as important as colours, textures, or furniture. It allows every detail to be appreciated at its best. A living room with warm, diffused light invites rest and relaxation, while kitchens and offices call for clear, functional lighting. Light can even alter our perception of size: well-lit spaces feel more spacious, while shadows add cosiness and intimacy. In open-plan spaces, lighting helps define zones and create distinct atmospheres. Working with light in “layers” — some functional, others atmospheric — allows the ambience to be adapted to each occasion. Technology has opened new possibilities. Home automation makes it easy to adjust intensity, colour temperature, and pre-set scenes at the touch of a button or through voice control, combining comfort, efficiency, and sustainability. Sensors and timers optimise energy use and make the most of available natural light.
There are different types of lighting:
– General, which provides uniform light;
– Task, directed at specific activities;
– Accent, which highlights objects and textures;
– Ambient, which creates comfort and character.
The colour temperature, measured in Kelvin, defines the emotional tone of the light — from cool, energising shades to warm, welcoming ones. With dimmers, the intensity can be adjusted to suit any moment.
The interaction between light and materials is crucial: glossy surfaces reflect and amplify light, while matt finishes absorb it and add depth. A lighting design should be developed alongside the choice of materials and furniture.
No artificial source can replace the richness of natural light.
Large windows, skylights and sheer curtains allow light to flow through the home, reducing the need for electric lighting.
Efficient LED solutions and smart systems make homes more responsible and environmentally aware.
More than a technical resource, light is emotion: it gives spaces their soul, reveals colour, creates moments, and transforms everyday life into an experience.
