The Municipality of Maia has announced the opening of applications for the second edition of the award. Architects, owners and builders have the opportunity to submit their proposals digitally via the portal pma.joaoalvarorocha.pt, which provides all the information necessary for the application process.

The jury is chaired by the mayor of Maia, António Silva Tiago, and includes the architects Gonçalo Byrne, representing APJAR – Associação Pró-Arquitetura João Álvaro Rocha, Carla Garrido, for the Order of Architects Northern Regional Section, as well as Teresa Calix and Ana Resende, for the Maia municipality.

This award stands out for its innovative approach, valuing not only architectural and urban quality, but also the social and cultural function and urban integration of the works. Applications must be for works completed at least three years ago and no more than ten years ago.

The João Álvaro Rocha Municipal Award, held every two years and promoted by Maia City Council, is organised by APJAR – Associação Pró-Arquitetura João Álvaro Rocha, with the support of the Order of Architects – Northern Regional Section. The award, which is non-pecuniary in nature, includes the publication of a book, the production of a video, a conference and a guided tour, and may include up to four Honourable Mentions.

The first edition of the award, held in 2022, honoured the ISMAI Stadium, designed by architects José Carlos Loureiro, Luís Pinheiro Loureiro and José Manuel Loureiro, and awarded an Honourable Mention to the SISMA Industrial Unit by architect Sandra Maria Machado Ferreira Garcia.

APJAR promotes participation in architecture, both locally and internationally, based on the work of João Álvaro Rocha.
