20 SEPTEMBER AT HOMEING

SOLUTIONS THAT ALLOW THE RECONVERSION OF CLOSED SPACES ARE UNDER DISCUSSION

The 9th edition of Homeing, the interior design event, is about to open its doors to announce the main innovations in the sector. From 19 to 21 September, Lisbon’s Pavilhão Carlos Lopes will host important debates and exhibitions on current issues that are impacting the sector and society.

Faced with a lack of permanent housing and the closure to the public of dozens of commercial spaces in the centre of large cities, the ‘From commerce to housing’ conference aims to debate creative solutions developed by project teams, together with their clients, to rebuild disused commercial spaces and revitalise run-down urban buildings, with the aim of attracting new population groups interested in living and/or developing their own businesses.

‘The conversion of empty and/or unoccupied commercial spaces into permanent housing is not intended to solve the entire housing shortage problem in Portugal, but it does help to alleviate it through differentiated housing solutions. This is reflected in a parallel possibility: the confirmation of the role of architects in the search for qualified and creative solutions to mitigate the social issues that affect most of our cities today,’ says Ana Isabel Santos, architect and founder of MESA Atelier.

Founded in 2018, MESA Atelier is the result of intense research and experimentation work that has progressed to the development of various national and international architectural competitions, in which the projects express the recognition of a particular territory, its values and characterising elements.

Also on display at this 9th edition of Homeing will be the work of the winners of the ‘Taylor Design Award’ competition, which highlights the talent of young designers from the Caldas da Rainha School of Arts and Design (ESAD.CR) who were challenged to create illustrations transformed into carpets, promoting innovation and the start of their professional careers. With the theme ‘The Origin of Species’, this competition is one of Santos Monteiro‘s social responsibility initiatives which, together with ESAD.CR, seek to support and encourage the local creative community. First place was awarded to Cecilia Schmidt, with her carpet ‘Koral’, which captured the essence of the theme with a visually striking interpretation. Honourable mentions were awarded to Magdalena Liebert, with ‘Evolution Puzzle’, and Mafalda Garcia, with ‘Dágua’, both of which stood out for their aesthetic and conceptual approach to the theme.

Homeing, organised by Exponor, celebrates the areas of interior design and architecture, offering solutions that impact projects in both the residential and contract sectors, guaranteeing a networking experience for all visitors.
