Pelcorte: A Portuguese Benchmark in Design and Comfort
With more than four decades of experience in the furniture and upholstery industry, Pelcorte has established itself as a leading Portuguese manufacturer of sofas, chairs, and comfort solutions that combine design, innovation, and quality. Located in the heart of one of Portugal’s largest furniture production hubs, the company has steadily strengthened its market presence through a strong commitment to excellence, technology, and Portuguese craftsmanship.
Over the years, Pelcorte has distinguished itself through its ability to follow industry trends without losing its identity, developing products that seamlessly combine functionality, comfort, and aesthetics. The brand also maintains a strong commitment to sustainability, using responsibly sourced materials and adopting more conscious and innovative production practices.
More than simply manufacturing furniture, Pelcorte strives to create pieces that become part of people’s everyday lives, prioritising comfort, durability, and personalisation. The following interview offers a closer look at the company’s history, the challenges facing the industry, its vision for the future, and the values that continue to drive Pelcorte’s growth and recognition both in Portugal and abroad.

1. How has Pelcorte evolved over the last few decades in an increasingly competitive industry?
Pelcorte was acquired by us, Júlio and Silvestre Carneiro, in March 2011. The company was already well-known and highly respected, with an excellent reputation in the market.
It was certainly a major challenge, but within a year we had already leased an additional 1,800 m² facility to expand our operations. Everything happened very quickly. We invested in machinery, CNC equipment, and much more to respond efficiently to growing demand while continuing to expand the business.
2. What have been the company’s main milestones since its foundation?
There have been many important milestones, but some stand out more than others.
The acquisition of Pelcorte in 2011 changed our lives and came with significant responsibility, as the company already had more than 40 years of history.
In 2013, we leased additional premises to support our growth and better serve our customers.
In 2014, we purchased a 10,700 m² plot of land to build our own manufacturing facility. Construction began in 2015, and we relocated to the new premises in 2017.
In 2020, we acquired an additional 10,000 m² to accommodate the company’s continued growth. And we hope to have many more milestones to share ten years from now.
3. How would you define Pelcorte’s current positioning in the national and international markets?
Pelcorte has always positioned itself within the mid-to-high-end segment of the market, investing in premium raw materials, highly skilled craftsmanship, and state-of-the-art machinery. The result is a product whose quality speaks for itself and reaches numerous countries, including Portugal, France, Belgium, the United States, Dubai, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Algeria, Italy, Tunisia, Morocco, the Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Spain, Switzerland, Angola, Mozambique, and Brazil, among others.
4. Which international markets are currently the most significant?
Pelcorte serves all international markets, with France, the United States, and the Middle East currently being the most significant.
We do this both directly and indirectly, as many domestic clients and brands approach us to collaborate on the development of projects and products.
5. What are currently the biggest challenges facing the upholstery and furniture industry?
Given the current geopolitical instability and the slowdown in some key markets, the greatest challenge is maintaining and ideally increasing turnover without reducing our operational structure or workforce.
It is a difficult balance to achieve, but it is what drives us every day.
6. Which trends are shaping the future of upholstered furniture?
Based on our experience and the projects we are developing, curved lines are clearly the dominant trend. This is evident across all product categories, including sofas, armchairs, chairs, and beds. The designs we are asked to develop increasingly move in this direction.
At the same time, colour palettes are becoming ever more inspired by nature, with shades of green, brown, beige, and terracotta dominating design choices.

7. Has personalisation become essential in the premium segment?
In the premium segment, where we have operated since the beginning, personalisation has always been essential. In fact, it has been one of the guiding principles behind our work since the day we took over Pelcorte.
8. How do you balance craftsmanship with industrial automation?
It is not easy, and we will not pretend otherwise. However, through organisation, adequate facilities, and highly skilled professionals, we are able to find the right balance.
It is an ongoing challenge, but it is also what keeps us demanding the highest standards from ourselves.
9. What advice would you give to young entrepreneurs looking to enter the furniture industry?
Our advice would be to carefully consider which area of the furniture sector they want to focus on, the market segment they wish to enter, their target customers, and the identity of their brand.
In our view, these are some of the key elements for any project aspiring to achieve long-term success.
10. How do you envision Pelcorte in ten years’ time?
In ten years, we see Pelcorte as an even stronger and more recognised name in the market, producing high-quality upholstered furniture and furnishings for clients seeking distinctive pieces crafted with care and attention to detail.
To further support this growth, we will soon begin the construction of an additional 4,800 m² manufacturing facility, dedicated to furniture production and customised finishing solutions.
